Robots that ship are boring: what Simbe, Persona AI and Agility actually announced

Simbe has 3,000 Tally robots under contract. Persona AI is still developing a shipyard welder. Agility's $300M orders are a company claim. What each announcement actually says, and what to watch next.

From a named source

Most robots that actually ship are boring. That is the point of this week's short, and it holds up when you read what the three companies actually announced.

Simbe: 3,000 Tally robots under contract

On September 21, 2026, Simbe Robotics said it has passed 3,000 autonomous units under contract, which it calls the largest commercially committed fleet of shelf-intelligence technology, based on its own research. The figure counts contracts, not robots confirmed on shop floors. Simbe does not say how many are deployed.

What the company does report: more than 75 retail banners in nearly a dozen countries, and Tally, its inventory robot, introduced about ten years ago. Tally captures stock availability, product location, prices and promotions. Simbe says more than 90% of store managers who work with it say it makes their job better. That figure is the company's own.

Persona AI: welding on ships, still in development

Persona AI is building a humanoid welder for shipyards. On March 23, 2026, HD Hyundai announced a joint development agreement with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Robotics and Persona AI, after a positive evaluation of the prototype. It builds on a partnership first signed in May 2025.

The split is clear. Persona builds a bipedal humanoid for shipyard conditions. The shipbuilder's engineers build AI welding training from field data. HD Hyundai Robotics handles integration and on-site testing.

Persona's founders told IEEE Spectrum the first task is long, linear welds, which are simple but physically punishing. The prototype is still learning to weld. No date for deployment has been announced.

Agility Robotics: orders are the claim to watch

Agility Robotics announced on June 24, 2026 that it will merge with the blank-check company Churchill Capital Corp XI at a $2.5 billion pre-money valuation. Press coverage says Agility reports more than $300 million in multi-year orders for its next-generation Digit v5, and more than 30 potential customers evaluating large-scale deployments.

Treat that with care. The backlog is a company claim. Customer concentration is not disclosed, Digit is in commercial use at a small number of sites, and the deal has not closed.

What this means

A demo proves a robot can do a task once. A repeat order proves a customer got value from it. Simbe's number is contracts, Agility's is an order backlog, and Persona's is a development agreement. They are three different stages. We will track whether each one turns announcements into second orders.
